Superb storytelling. Set in a fully formed 'parallel London', there is a sense of dark menace and unknown ancient power about to harm the two main characters, pervading the whole book. You really care about the main protagonists, and as readers we lurch from one threat to another with them; beside them almost. If you crossed C.J. Samson with Philip Pullman, that's what you have here. This can't be a debut novel, the writing is too skilled, emotionally rich and detailed. Can't wait for his next book.
